Tunisia is bordered by the Mediterranean to the north and east. This Republic is the smallest of the nations situated along the Atlas mountain range. The south of Tunisia is composed of the Sahara desert with much of the remaining land consisting of particularly fertile soil. During Roman times it was known as the “bread-basket” of Rome. It passed under French protection in 1881. Tunisia is an export oriented country having relations with the European Union – with whom it has an association of agreement.
